About

Khushmi Mehta is an art historian specializing in Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, completing her Ph.D. in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York. Her doctoral dissertation, “Entangled Narratives: Formations of Community and Collectivity at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda (1960s–1980s)” examines the development of interdisciplinary artistic and pedagogical practices at the first postcolonial art school in India.

She is the 2025–27 Andrew W. Mellon Predoctoral Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Visual Art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. At the CUNY Graduate Center, her research has been supported by the Vartan Gregorian Dissertation Fellowship, the Doctoral Student Research Grant, the Provost’s Office, and the Art History Department.

She has previously held curatorial and research positions at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Newark Museum of Art, the Museum of Art and Photography in Bangalore, Christie’s New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

Mehta holds an M.Phil. in Art History from the CUNY Graduate Center and a B.A. with Distinction in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
